Additive Free Tip – What is lurking in your peanut butter?

Is there something nasty lurking in your peanut butter?

Many peanut butters (including Kraft) contain the antioxidant 320 (butylated hydroxyanisole). Potential effects from this nasty number are headaches and migraines, DNA damage, wheezing, asthma, insomnia, fatigue, depression, eczema and hives. It is a recognised carcinogen and is suspected in respiratory, endocrine, skin, liver, immuno and neuro toxicity. It is derived from petroleum – yuck and is prohibited in food for infants. (also beware of 319 and 321).

There are many different brands of peanut butter for sale in both supermarkets and health food shops that contain 100% peanuts. In our house, before we started making our own, we liked the Macro brand from Woolworths. I think it has the best consistency. It can take a bit of time to get used to the difference in taste. Try having it with raw honey or jam (read the labels!) until you and the kids get used to it on its own. This worked for my little peanut butter addict!

If you have a high speed blender, food processor or thermomix you can make your own. Just whiz roasted (unsalted) peanuts for 3 minutes. So easy. For extra yummy peanut butter with extra nutrition, add in some dessicated coconut while you are processing the peanuts – delicious!
